Today's Sunset Flag Lowering Ceremony is dedicated to paying tribute to the dedication of Police, Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians who left their civilian jobs to serve in the military and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. A few of the fallen service personnel being honoured on November 7 include: 7 members of the Calgary Police Service – 6 fallen in the First World War and one fallen in the Second World War; 4 members of the Calgary Fire Department who fell in service during the First World War; and Corporal (CPL) Michael Starker, a member of the Calgary Emergency Medical Services (EMS), who is remembered for his service and sacrifice in Afghanistan. These individuals reflect the commitment and bravery of First Responders who selflessly served their country in times of need.

Participants and invited guests:

Each evening cadets, scouts, guides, etc. are invited and scheduled to perform the flag lowering detail. The sunset ceremonies also include choirs, buglers, pipers, flag detail, uniformed members of the community, including Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police Services, EMS, Alberta Sheriffs and Military Members. Invited guests include civic, provincial, federal government officials, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Governor General of Canada, Consul Generals, uniformed members of the community, Veterans, community leaders and members of the public.

After the ceremony, members of the public are welcome to walk amongst the crosses all night long and into the morning dawn.
