Son of J. M. Burke of Montreal West, Quebec.
On 4 July 1915, the Anglo Californian was attacked in the south of Ireland by U-39 which damaged her with cannon, killing 21 crew members, position 50°15'N/09°00'W. She finally managed to get to Queenstown (now Cobh, Ireland) to be repaired. Sold in 1916, she became the Vandalia and was sunk by U-96 on 9 June 1918 without casualties. Her captain Frederick Daniel Parslow was posthumously awarded a Royal Naval Reserve commission and the Victoria Cross (VC) for manoeuvring under fire from U-39.
