St-Blaise-sur-Richelieu, Quebec

Mr. Demers is an active member of the Canadian Armed Forces since 1997. He has been a member of Branch 11 of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1994. From 2004 to 2009, he was sergeant-at-arms, and since 2010, he has been Branch Vice-President. Mr. Demers is involved in a number of his branch’s committees, including the youth committee that aims to educate youth on the importance of remembrance. He also assists with the Poppy Campaign each year, and organizes Lacolle’s Remembrance Day parade. In 1999, Mr. Demers was one of the creators of the G. H. Murray park in Lacolle. The park honours Corporal Murray, a Veteran of the Italian Campaign, and is dedicated to all Veterans in the region. In 2004, in honour of the 60th anniversary of Normandy Campaign, Mr. Demers presented a session on Wilbert Fraser, a Veteran from the first wave of landings. In 2005, he helped organize a commemorative ceremony with the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School. Since 2005, Mr. Demers has organized an annual Christmas dinner for Veterans from his branch and local cadets. In 2009, he participated in a youth remembrance pilgrimage, organized by the Legion, where he gave presentations on the role of Canadians during the First and Second World Wars. Inspired by his journey and the story of his grandfather, Private Victor Raymond, who served with the Régiment de Maisonneuve during the Second World War, he prepared a conference with the goal of presenting the story of French-Canadian units during the First and Second World Wars through his own travels and experiences. Since 2009, he travelled throughout Quebec and gave more than 75 presentations to approximately 3,500 youths.
