Baptized Joseph-Gédéon-Hermel Ducharme. Son of Eugène Ducharme (deceased in 1913) and Marie-Louise Hénault (remarried in 1916 to Joseph Coutu), of Joliette, Québec. His usual first name was “Hermel” and he stated being born in 1894 when he enlisted.
He enlisted at 17 and was fighting at the front since almost one year when, during the assault and the taking of Hill 70, near Lens, he was severely wounded to a thigh from a big piece of shrapnel. He was then evacuated to No. 4 Field ambulance, located at Fosse 10, and he died there shortly after arrival.

Sains-en-Gohelle is a mining village 20 kilometres north of Arras on the road to Bethune. Fosse No.10 is a pithead and group of miners' houses south of the village.
