Son of François Hamel (deceased in 1899) and Hermine Archambault (deceased in 1902) of Frenchtown, Missoula, Montana. Husband of Rosa Léonard, of Montréal, Québec, and father of four children in the 1911 census.

Severely wounded to the head on 18 September 1916 during the Battle of Courcelette, he was evacuated to England where he died at 2nd Northern General Hospital, Beckett’s Park, Leeds.
