Son of Lauchlin and Elizabeth MacLean, of Big Island, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. He was a carpenter and single. He was the brother of Pte Hector Norman MacLean, deceased 12 January 1918 and Lance Corporal Neil Archibald MacLean, deceased 16 September 1916.

BARLIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY Pas de Calais, France
Barlin is a village about 11 kilometres south-west of Bethune on the D188, between the Bethune-Arras and Bethune-St. Pol roads, about 6.5 kilometres south-east of Bruay. The BARLIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY and EXTENSION lie to the north of the village on the D171 road to Houchin.
