Corporal (retired) Donald Edward Young is nominated for the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation for his work with the Canadian Veterans Freedom Riders (CVFR).
Cpl Young joined the Canadian Veteran Freedom Riders in 2014 where he has held the role of treasurer for the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (CVFR LLRP) of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. He is an integral part of the unit contributing thousands of hours toward the well-being of local veterans in this community. He assists homeless Veterans with temporary accommodations, food and emergency debt assistance, all while seeking donations from local community businesses. In July 2020 his efforts led to four major donations totaling over $12,500 in order for CVFR Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound can continue its mandate of providing emergency assistance to local Veterans in need.
In addition, Cpl Young is a true team player who continues to be involved in the CVFR food drive assisting the local food bank and Veterans. Each year he helps the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6 in Owen Sound Ontario with the Poppy Drive and represents CVFR every year at the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies. Much of the volunteer work he has provided as treasurer and a member is a lifeline to local veterans, as he continues to put exceptional time and effort to ensure the Veteran community is cared for and honoured.
