Son of Osmond William and Alice Maud (nee Studd) Geernaert, of Prince George, British Columbia. Brother of Private Edward Douglas Geernaert, 7th Battalion, killed in action on 24 April 1915, and Louis Glorieux. Lance Corporal Geernaert also served four years with the United States Marine Corps.

St. Souplet is a village about 6 kilometres south of Le Cateau, which is a small town approximately 20 kilometres south-east of Cambrai. ST. SOUPLET BRITISH CEMETERY lies to the south-west of the village after the village of St. Benin.
