Location:

Bethune is located 29 kilometres north of Arras. The BETHUNE TOWN CEMETERY is on the northern outskirts of Bethune near the junction of the River Lawe and the Aire la Bassee Canal. From the town centre turn right in front of the Tribunal and second right at the bottom of the road down to the cul de sac.

  • Photo of Norman Planche– (From Stanstead College Yearbook, July 1919)
Norman E. Planche, enlisted August 10th 1914, in the 14th Battalion, Royal Montrela Regiment, as a private. He went into training with the rest of the First Canadian Expeditionary Force at Valcartier. In November he sailed for England and was training at Salisbury Plain until February 1915 when he landed in France. 
Norman went through the first battle of Ypres and the battle of Langemark. In the battle of Festubert, May 20th 1915, he was killed in action. He was buried in the Military Cemetery at Bethune, France.
