The remains of Alberta soldier, Pte. Herbert Peterson of Berry Creek, were discovered years ago during a road-building project. Peterson was named in 2007 after DNA testing of bone fragments established his identity. He was buried at a site south of the French village of Avion, where Canadian units fiercely clashed 94 years ago with entrenched German forces in the weeks following Canada's landmark victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917.

Peterson's remains, along with telltale buttons and shreds of uniform that first identified him as a Canadian infantryman from the Edmonton-based 49th Battalion, were re-interred during a ceremony in April 2007 at a Commonwealth war cemetery in France.
