Son of William Harold Knapp and Shirley Gowen. His father, Lieutenant William Harold Knapp, enrolled on 23 September 1914 in camp Valcartier, Québec, as a private with the 12th Battalion CEF during the First World War. He was wounded at Vimy on 9 April 1917 with the PPCLI, and he later enrolled at the Citadelle de Québec on 27 May 1918, as Lieutenant, with the 5th Battalion C.G.R..

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
