Son of John Carruthers and Marion Ramsay, of Trail, British Columbia Canada. His father served in Europe with the British Army during the First World War.

Brother of Sergeant James Sneldon Carruthers, service number K-135, who served overseas in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and survived the conflict.

Served in Canada and in Great Britain. He had 801 days of service, including 488 days overseas.
