Location:

BERGEN-OP-ZOOM CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY is located 39 Km north west of Antwerp and 19 Km after passing the Border into the Netherlands. The N11 connects Antwerp to Bergen op Zoom via Kapellen, Pulte, Hoogerheide and finally on to Bergen op Zoom. On reaching Bergen op Zoom railway station turn right onto the Stationsplein and after 200 M turn right onto the Bredastraat. Follow this road for 500 M where it becomes Wouwsestraatweg and carry straight on for 2.5 kilometres. The street name has now changed to the Ruytershoveweg and the BERGEN-OP-ZOOM CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY can be found on the left of this street. Steps into cemetery (not suitable for wheelchairs).

  • Newspaper clipping– P/O Christie served on Halifax LW 124 in 429 Squadron. On the night of May 24/25, 1944 the crew was airborne 2256 from their home base at Leeming, Yorkshire, on a mission to attack two railyards at Aachan. It was shot down by Flak near Tilburg, crashing into a wood between Tilburg and Dongen. A total of five crews did not return from this raid, with seven airmen taken Prisoners of War. Those killed on LW 124 were initially buried at Tilburg, and later re-interred in the Canadian section of Bergen op Zoom War Cemetery. The two airmen with P/O Christie are: P/O (FE) William McG. Stewart, from Goodlands, Manitoba P/L (P) De Leon Fernandez, age 27, from Guatemala City P/O K. H. Jackson, RAF, has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. F/O R. B. Rudd, F/S H. Dawson, RAF, and WO2 L. M. Shelter were taken Prisoners of War. WO2 Shelter was captured in Antwerp. Information from //lostbombers.co.uk; CWGC P/O (FE) William McG.
