Additional Information

Born:

Enlistment:

January 27, 1916
Montréal, Quebec

Baptized Joseph-Wilfrid-Rosario Chouinard. Son of Désiré Chouinard and Émérance Ledoux, of St-Césaire, Rouville, Québec. His mother’s first name varies in official archive documents (Émérance, Éméranda, Méranda, Amanda and Émérentienne). Wilfrid stated being born on 26 July 1889 when he enlisted.

He is inscribed as Rosario in the 1891 and 1901 censuses and he is not found in the 1911 census. It is possible that his real name was Rosario and that he decided to enlist using Wilfrid for reasons only known to him. He first named his sister Èva, of Montréal, as next of kin and changed that later with his father’s name.

He was initially recorded as “missing, presumed to have died” and his name is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial. His remains were recovered in 1954 and was then buried. His first name is spelled “Wilfred” on page 66 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.

Commemorated on Page 66 of the First World War Book of Remembrance. Request a copy of this page. Download high resolution copy of this page.
