Named Henricus Claes at birth. Son of Petrus-Ludovicus Claes (deceased in 1893) and Catharina Heyvaert, of Anvers, Belgium. Henri had immigrated with his wife, Léontine VanMaelsake, in 1911 and settled in Coleman, Alberta, where his brother Jean was already installed. He was father of two daughters when he enlisted.
