The Ottawa Memorial (Commonwealth Air Forces) is dedicated to the men and women who lost their lives in the Second World War while serving or training with the Air Forces of the Commonwealth in Canada, the British West Indies, and the United States. Their graves have not been located or are not possible to maintain due to their remote location.
The memorial was designed by EA Gardner (Chief Architect, Public Works Canada) and WE Fancott (Architect, Public Works), constructed in 1958, erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 1 July 1959.
The commemorated include:
- Commonwealth Air Force members – Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Indian Air Force, and Royal New Zealand Air Force.
- Civilians who served with the Transport Command, Ferry Command and Civilian Technical Corps
The main feature is a sculptured terrestrial globe in bronze, 3 metres in diameter, on a base formed by three bronze beavers rising from the centre of an ornamental pool. The globe, of open lattice-work corresponding to the lines of latitude and longitude, on which the land masses are super imposed in low relief, is crowned by the Air Forces emblem of a bronze eagle with outspread wings.
Two curved screen walls faced in limestone, bearing cast bronze panels on which the names appear, face inwards towards the globe. They are placed slightly off centre to allow a clear view through the Ottawa Memorial from the central steps on Sussex Drive and from the wide pathway. There are two Air Force crests in the paving between the screen walls.
This memorial is one of the Commission’s five Memorials to the Missing in Canada. Other Commission memorials for missing Second World War Air Force members have been erected in England, Malta, Egypt, Singapore, and in cemeteries on Pacific Ocean islands.
High above the Ottawa River and surrounded by lawns, this memorial occupies an impressive site. It is a striking tribute to the missing dead. Those who see it will remember the achievements and sacrifices of airmen who operated from North American bases and did not return.

1939 – 1945
1939 – 1945
In honoured memory of the men and women of the air forces of the British Commonwealth and Empire who gave their lives in Canada in the United States of America and in the neighbouring lands and seas and who have no known grave.
[The Ottawa Memorial]
In the Second World War air power played an increasingly important role in offensive and defensive capacities.
At the start of the war there was a shortage of aircraft and trained pilots. The United Kingdom was considered too vulnerable to attack and so training centres were established elsewhere. Bases in North America trained over 137,000 commonwealth aircrew making a vital contribution to the Allied victory, while much needed aircraft and supplies were ferried to the United Kingdom from the United States and Canada by both civilian and air force personnel.
This memorial, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1959, commemorates by name some 800 men and women who lost their lives while serving or training with the Air Forces of the Commonwealth in Canada. The West Indies and the United States and who have no known grave. Their names are arranged according to year of death, force, and rank.
The Commonwealth war Graves Commission is responsible for the maintenance of graves and memorials in some 150 countries which commemorate around 1,700,000 members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars. The war dead commemorated here and elsewhere includes those of several different faiths and of none.
