CHARLES MICHEL D'IRUMBERRY DE SALABERRY 1778-1829

Né à Beauport, Charles Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry s'enrôla à quatorze ans dans l'armée britannique, servit aux Indes Occidentales et en Europe, puis revint au Canada en 1810. Il leva et commanda le corps des Voltigeurs canadiens durant la guerre anglo-américaine en 1812. Colonel, commandant de l'avant-garde, il remporta l'importante bataille de Châteauguay, le 26 octobre 1813. En récompense, il fut créé compagnon de l'Ordre du Bain et nommé au Conseil législatif du Bas-Canada. Il mourut à Chambly.

Born at Beauport Charles Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry joined the British army at the age of fourteen. After serving in the West Indies and Europe he returned to Canada in 1810. Here he raised the Voltigeur corps which he was to command during the War of 1812. For his victory over an invading American army at the Battle of the Châteauguay on 26 October 1813 de Salaberry was created Companion of the Order of the Bath and named to the Legislative Council of Lower Canada. This distinguished soldier died at Chambly.
