Inscription

This 2011 public art installation created by artist Daniel Castillo and Jaroslav (Jerry) Vrabec proudly recognizes the contributions of all men and women who valiantly serve to defend our freedom with courage, dignity and honour. Created from stainless steel, concrete, tempered and enamelled glass, this piece is divided into three parts: the base contains symbols depicting the tri-service cap badge worn by all members of the Canadian Forces until they have completed basic training; the central part is a flame- a symbol of hope and recognition of the heat of the wars and military action; and the top is a tribute to pilot Charley Fox, the Second World War hero for whom this overpass was named, representing three airplanes flying up and leaving a “trace” behind them in a portrayal of the missing man formation. Majestically rising 10 metres (32 feet) above the centre of the overpass, this artwork stands to ensure we will always remember their service and sacrifices.
