Hallie Sloan

Ottawa, Ontario

Lt Col (ret'd) Hallie Sloan is a Second World War Nurse and post-war nursing sister. She is a long-time principal in the Nursing Sisters Association which she is credited for maintaining as a vital force. For many years, she has been a tireless, and effective supporter and advocate of Veterans and still visits Veterans in hospital. She volunteers weekly in the Administrative Office of the Perley & Rideau Veterans Medical Centre (community service).

Ms Sloan has participated in a number of pilgrimages and willingly participates in commemorative events, representing Veterans and wartime nurses. She cheerfully joins in Veterans' Week ceremonies, laying wreaths and participates in the unveiling of Remembrance Posters. Although Ms Sloan has her own impressive place in our military history, she always points out to the people she cared for as being the worthiest of wartime remembrance. She enjoys describing the work of nursing sisters during the Second World War and underlines the contribution and achievements of Canadians who fought and made grave sacrifices on the battlefield. Over the years, Ms Sloan has given numerous speeches to many groups including Veterans Affairs Canada and the Girl Guides, always making herself available to youth and media.

As a nurse, Veteran and proud Canadian, Ms Sloan is a most deserving role model and stands as an outstanding example of altruism and selfless devotion to her peers.
