Honourary Colonel Jennifer (J’Lyn) Nye is nominated for her dedication to honouring Veterans in her leadership role at Remembrance Day ceremonies
The Remembrance Day ceremony at the Butterdome has been the de facto provincial service for many years. In 2012, the lead organization for the ceremony had to step back and there was a risk that this tradition would come to an end. A group of volunteers, including J’Lyn Nye, stepped in to fill the void. For the past 8 years, she has been volunteering as a Master of Ceremonies for the Butterdome Remembrance Day ceremony. As the emcee, she controls every aspect of the ceremony from start to finish.
Several months in advance of the ceremony, she begins researching how Albertans have helped forge Canada’s military history. She concentrates on the military milestone of the year whether it be Canadian operations in Afghanistan, the First World War or the Normandy Campaign, and showcases Albertan Veterans from those conflicts. She makes it a point to educate the audience and participants not only about the fallen, but also about the historical circumstances involved.
She readily volunteers her professional expertise as a media host and she keeps the audience engaged at all times while the parade assembles. The countless hours she dedicates to the preparation each year results in an extraordinarily rich event for all involved.
