Roderich Winston Stewart

Mr. Roderich Winston Stewart has worked to assist Veterans with their benefits applications for over twenty years. He is also very passionate about remembrance. With The Royal Canadian Legion’s Alberta/Northwest Territories Command, Mr. Stewart played a significant role in lobbying the Government of Alberta to create Veterans’ license plates and to have a highway named the Veterans Memorial Highway. With the Legion’s print publications, Mr. Stewart has been a contributing writer for over twenty years, promoting knowledge of the service and sacrifice of Canadian service men and women. He was also part of the Legion Command Counsel that commenced the Military Recognition Book Series in Alberta, a series that has now run into its eighth edition. During Veterans’ Week, Mr. Stewart has regularly volunteered to speak at schools in the area and has spoken at community remembrance services as well. He also makes sure he is aware of honours and awards programs offered to Veterans and helps to identify and assist those who might be eligible with the application process. For the last twenty years, he has also helped Veterans obtain entitled benefits from Veterans Affairs Canada. In his role as service officer, Mr. Stewart has emceed several Veterans’ funerals who desired something less traditional and has provided the Legion tribute at many funerals and memorial services. Mr. Stewart was also a founder of a program at his local branch in which Christmas “comfort packages” are given to local area Veterans and Veterans’ surviving spouses. Mr. Stewart has also been involved with the activities surrounding Decoration Day and ensures that Veterans buried in the area are identified and honoured.
