William Lundrigan (posthumous)

Mr. Lundrigan was a Second World War Veteran who served in the Royal Navy from 1940-46. After surviving a torpedo attack in November 1940, he went on to take part in D-Day on June 6, 1944. Mr. Lundrigan was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, where he served in many capacities including Branch President. Together with other members of his community, Mr. Lundrigan cut the wood and helped build RCL Branch 22 in Upper Island Cove. Before joining the Legion, Mr. Lundrigan was a member of the Great War Veterans Association, a First World War Association that welcomed Second World War Veterans, where he acted as Treasurer for several, local fundraisers. Over the years, Mr. Lundrigan visited shut-ins, assisted Veterans with household repairs and helped with snow removal. He continued to be an active member of Cpl. Matt Brazil Chapter, Branch 9 in Spaniard's Bay. He regularly participated in annual Remembrance Day Ceremonies at local schools including Holy Redeemer Elementary School, where his name and photograph have been inscribed on their `Wall of Honour' in recognition of his steadfast dedication. During the Year of the Veteran, Mr. Lundrigan concluded the assembly by symbolically presenting the Holy Redeemer students with the White Ensign, a flag that flew on his wartime ship during the battles of Sicily, Salerno and Anzio in Italy. A well-known community leader, Mr. Lundrigan was also a member of the George Cross Island Association and the Naval Association. Through his active involvement, he was an outstanding role model for Veterans, students, teachers and his fellow citizens in Upper Island Cove.
