Combining his passion for horticulture with a deep commitment to remembrance, Jim Landry has dedicated himself to creating living memorials that honour Canada's military heritage.
A devoted member of the 250 Wing, Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Association for five years and the Turnbull (NB) Chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society for over a decade, Jim has provided exceptional service to the Veteran community through both commemorative and educational initiatives.
In 2016, Jim launched a significant project to commemorate Canada's military past by coordinating the planting of hundreds of Vimy Ridge English Oak trees across central and eastern Canada. Working closely with local Veterans' organizations and schools, he helped establish these trees as enduring symbols of remembrance.
Jim has also played a key role in the design of several memorials. He created the RCAF roundel landscaping for the RCAF 100 Pennfield Ridge Air Force Memorial and designed environmental elements for the RCAF 100 Camp Cole Air Force Memorial, blending natural beauty with historical tribute.
Beyond memorial design, Jim actively engages with educators and students, organizing tree-planting events that serve as both environmental and educational experiences. He coordinates the timing and locations of these events, ensuring meaningful participation and impact.
Jim's dedication also extends internationally. He has completed several solo cycling tours throughout the Maritimes, as well as in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, England and France. These tours include visits to Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries and often involve outreach to local Veterans' groups and students, fostering cross-cultural connections and shared remembrance.
In a particularly meaningful gesture, Jim donated an original Vimy Ridge grave marker to the Canadian War Museum, further contributing to the preservation of Canada's military history.
