Robert Merrick

Calgary, Alberta

Robert (Bob) Merrick has demonstrated exceptional dedication, compassion and creativity in his unwavering support for Veterans through his long-standing involvement with the Carewest Colonel Belcher care home and the Veterans Food Bank of Alberta.

As a member of the Vets’ Angels—a name affectionately given by the residents of the Carewest Colonel Belcher care home—Bob has volunteered for over a decade alongside a team of 20 committed individuals. Together, they strive to build meaningful relationships with every Veteran, their caregivers and families, ensuring their care is as comforting and dignified as possible. In addition to regular monthly visits, Bob helps organize and celebrate special occasions, including birthday parties, Remembrance Day ceremonies, Christmas events and the ever-popular “beer calls”. His warm personality and disarming sense of humour have become a highlight for the Veterans during every visit.

Bob is also known for his innovative and hands-on approach to supporting Veterans through fundraising and community engagement. He has organized events such as a Christmas woodworking craft sale and a silent auction breakfast, with all proceeds benefiting the Veterans Food Bank of Alberta. Over the past three years, Bob has raised more than $7,000 annually and continues to actively seek donations and support for the food bank. His efforts have also brought in five new volunteers—an invaluable addition to the organization.

When the Veterans Food Bank underwent a major transition, consolidating from three facilities into one, Bob played a key role in the setup of the new location. His leadership and commitment ensured that the food bank remained operational throughout the move, minimizing disruption to the Veterans who rely on its services.

Bob Merrick’s boundless energy, compassion and unrelenting support for Canada’s Veterans are truly inspiring. He embodies the spirit of gratitude and service, living out the words: “Thank you for your service.”
