North Cumberland Memorial Hospital was established in 1947 as a memorial to war veterans. Originally one of several Red Cross outposts in the province, its operation was later transferred to a local board of directors funded by the Department of Health. The current facility was built with local support and fundraising and was opened in 1966. The hospital is dedicated to veterans of the First & Second World War from the Pugwash, Nova Scotia region.
