This memorial, erected in 1956 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 27th company, Canadian pontifical Zouaves, pays tribute to the papacy and to the Zouaves. In 1868, Canadian pontifical Zouaves formed seven detachments with more than 500 young men to protect Pope Pius IX's territory. Many came from the south of Montreal.
