Markings on this German howitzer's breechblock indicate that it was manufactured in 1913 by Friedrich Krupp AG, a large family-run German business that began making cannons in the 1840s. The 116th Battalion, including seconded Brantford and Brant County men, captured the 5.9 German Howitzer, No. 373, carriage No. 95, from Demuin, France, at the beginning of the Battle of Amiens and gifted it to the City of Brantford on 9 August 1918. The howitzer was chosen by A.W. Pratt, acting Officer Commanding the 116th Battalion, specifically for Brantford because of the gallant work of the men from the city during the operations at Amiens.
The City of Brantford also received a 7.7 cm Field Gun which was captured by the 18th Battalion and given by the Canadian Government for Brantford's part in the Great War. In 1980, both pieces were sent for restoration work and returned to the park. Later, the 7.7 Field Gun was put on display at the Canadian Military Heritage Museum. The German Howitzer was restored again in 2019 and 2022. After its return in 2019, it was dedicated on 28 September 2019.
