This Legion branch was dedicated to Captain Matthew J. Dawe on 1 November 2013. Born 1 April 1980 to a military family, Captain Dawe moved to Kingston in 1991. A Private in the Princess of Wales Own Regiment, he later attended the Royal Military College where he graduated as Cadet Wing Commander. He was then posted to 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, as a Platoon Commander. Like his father Peter and his brothers Peter Jr, Philip and James, he felt a strong affinity to the Canadian Forces.

On 4 July 2007, during Operation LUGER - a joint operation with the Afghan National Army and one he planned and named for his son Lucas who turned two that day - the vehicle in which he was travelling was struck by a remotely detonated improvised explosive device in the Panjwaii District.  The explosion killed Captain Dawe and five Canadian soldiers, as well as an Afghan interpreter.

Captain Dawe served his country proudly, with a strong conviction and compassion that many find to be inspiring to this day. His total dedication to his country, family and friends, valued by all, remain his legacy. He would be very humbled by this honour. May all those that serve be inspired by his example.
