The Korean War Gapyeong Battle Victory Monument was unveiled on June, 16, 2022. The large granite monument donated by Gapyeong County Mayor Sungki Kim was shipped from Korea. There are three bronze plaques and three, nine-metre flag poles. It is one of 30 memorials that have been donated to communities of Korean Veterans around the world.

Representatives of the Battle of Gapyeong Monument of Canada Committee, Korean Veterans Association of Canada, and Niagara Korean Association, alongside City of Niagara Falls staff, worked since September to select the ideal site and arrange for the monument to be created and installed.

“We want to remember, forever, the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers during the Korean War, in particular during the Gapyeong battle — we want to respect and to express our appreciation to the Korean War Veterans of Canada for their devotion and service,” said Kim through a translator.

The monument will become a historical symbol, acknowledging that Korean and Canadian forces fought united in the battles of the Korean War. Their harrowing achievements laid the foundation for the enduring friendship the two countries share.

The monument is located adjacent to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 51 Cenotaph

The Battle of Gapyeong

On the night of April 23-25 1951, the 2nd Battalion Princess
Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, withstood heavy attacks in the
Gapyeong River Valley by forces of the Chinese People's Volunteer
Army, which were attempting to push forward and capture Seoul.

Isolated from other units of the 27th British Commonwealth
Brigade and at one point, completely surrounded by the enemy, the
Patricia's gave up not one foot of ground, they halted the huge
enemy offensive and saved the Capital of the Republic of Korea.

For the gallant action, the Princess Patricia's 2nd Battalion,
which was in the chain of command of American Army Corps,
was awarded the United States Presidential Unit Citation.
