Havelock Street is named in honour of Major-General Sir Henry Havelock, KCB. He was born in England in 1795 and was the second of four brothers, all of whom entered the army. At the age of 20, he obtained a post as a second-lieutenant in the 95th Regiment of Foot, Rifle Brigade. Seeing little prospect of advancement in England, in 1822 he transferred to 13th Regiment (Light Infantry) and embarked for India. He served with distinction in the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824 – 1826) and the First Afghan War in 1839, where he remained until 1842. He saw further service in India and the Sikh Wars but he returned to England in 1849, returning to India in 1852. By 1854 he had been promoted to colonel and given command of a division in 1857. He and his forces were heavily engaged in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. For his valiant efforts during the Indian Mutiny, he was rewarded with a promotion and a baronetcy, but died of dysentery at the end of 1857.
