Michael was the son of Major Fred J. and Helen Ney. While returning to Naivasha from an advanced post, Michael was killed by a police jeep which ran into his car and injured the other occupants. He was buried with full military honours. Ney graduated from Ashbury in 1942, went directly to the Naval College in Esquimalt and after graduation from there in 1943, he went to Royal Roads Military College in Colwood. He served during the Second World War as a Midshipman with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve.
