Between 1947 - 1949, the community made plans to build a new facility but material shortages created during and following the Second World War delayed progress. Early in 1949 with financial assistance from a provincial grant program, Alliston Town Council voted to proceed with the project and in April of that year, the unnamed arena was first referred to as Alliston Memorial Arena. Presumably Council had decided to dedicate the new structure to those who had lost their lives in both the First and Second World Wars.
In May 1949, Council announced that the memorial arena and a large community hall would be built at a cost of over $82,000 on the understanding that local residents would step to the plate as a free labour source to offset the additional costs of the building. The community as a whole was committed to building this new facility.
On March 10, 1950, Alliston Memorial Arena was officially opened with Ontario Premier Leslie M. Frost in attendance. In a service at the arena on March 19, Royal Canadian Legion, Alliston Branch 171 dedicated the building to the memory of those who had died in service for this country in both World Wars.
The Alliston War Mural is located on the outside wall of the arena that faces the Alliston Cenotaph.
