The Fallen Soldiers Memorial was erected by the Community of Hearst and unveiled on November 15, 2009. The Sculpture evokes symbolism of a peacekeeper soldier in the Afghan conflict. The monument is dedicated to the local soldiers who died in First and Second World Wars, the Afghan conflict, and Peacekeeping Missions.

Le 20 mars 2009, le Cavalier Jack Bouthillier meurt au combat lors d'une mission de guerre de Afghanistan.
Sa mort secoue toutes les communautés du nord de l'Ontario et génère une vague de soldarité et de
compassion chez ses résidents. La guerre était plutôt méconnue par la jeune génération; elle fait
maintenant péniblement partie de leur vécu.

L'artiste local Réal Gagnon a été inspiré par cette tragédie; il a voulu commémorer ce jeune soldat et
honorer tous ceux de notre région qui ont perdu la vie au nom de la liberté; ils sont trop souvent oubliés.

Ce monument a été construit et financé grâce à des dons et du travail bénévole. Il témoigne de notre
reconnaissance envers les sacrifices de nos héros disparus et de l'engagement de la collectivité à se
souvenir et à les honorer.

On March 20, 2009, Trooper Jack Bouthillier of Hearst was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan. His
death shocked every Northern Ontario community, arousing compassion and a sense of solidarity amongst
residents. War is largely unknown to our younger generation, but it has now touched them painfully.
Local artist Real Gagnon was inspired to commemorate this young trooper and to honour all of our local
soldiers who have fallen in the name of fredom, for they are too often forgotten.

This memorial was constructed and financed by donations and volunteer work. It is our testimonial to the
sacrifices of our fallen heroes and this community's commitment to remembering and honouring them.
