Shaw Street School was home for the 123rd and 208th Battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and of the Royal Air Force during the First World War. It is not known when the Board of Education of the city of Toronto erected this plaque.

Shaw Street School was built in 1914 and closed by the Toronto District School Board in 2000-2001. Artscape Youngplace opened in this building in 2013.
