Mr. Spackman was born into a farming family but, due to the death of his father when he was very young he was raised in Stirling, Alberta. Mr. Spackman joined the air force and served in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Mr. Spackman was shot down and taken as a POW. After being moved around within Europe he was eventually rescued and returned to England.

I remember back in those times too that we used to, they'd stop us at these farm places and we'd chase the pigs right away from their bloody troughs and take the, whatever it is they...

Interviewer: Turnips?

Turnips or anything they had there, and we'd take them and wash ‘em off and cook ‘em. When I finally got picked up and I got fed, I was... the, the Englishmen... and the Americans both, they had us and they feeding us pretty damn good, you know. And this was about two or three days, and then they flew us in there and we landed in London, and I got on the scales at London and, hell, thought I'd be longer than that we were out... But I got on the scales in London, there, and I weighed 132 pounds.

Interviewer: How much did you normally weigh?

175. So I was skinny.
