Join us in marking Remembrance Day with a day of learning and reflection. Take part in workshops led by Library and Archives Canada (LAC) staff and external experts to discover how to use the collections in your research. These sessions will offer both instruction and historical context, along with time for hands-on exploration.
Following the workshops, we invite you to participate in a reflective activity, visit kiosks, explore the reference and genealogy rooms, and meet with local military history authors from the University of Ottawa Press between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meet Alan Bowker (A Church at War: MacKay Presbyterian Church, New Edinburgh, and the First World War), Stacey Barker, Krista Cooke and Molly McCullough (Material Traces of War / Vestiges de guerre).
The day-long event will feature workshops in both English and French. We encourage you to register for either the morning sessions in English or afternoon sessions in French.
About the workshops
In the Trenches: Digital Archives of the First World War
Want to learn more about the history of the First World War? LAC will show you how to locate and read the personnel files of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. You’ll also discover techniques for exploring digitized collections and documents, such as war diaries, photographs, and much more.
Capturing Hill 145: Building a Narrative for the Assault on Vimy Ridge
Led by historians from the Directorate of History and Heritage, this interactive exercise invites participants to use historical maps and operational records to explore the capture of Hill 145 (Vimy Ridge) on April 9, 1917. Working in small groups, we will trace the movements of four battalions from the 4th Division, and then collectively build a narrative of the attack within one sector of the battlefield. Please be advised that some of the historical language and handwritten materials in these documents may be difficult to interpret.
