Arnal Lake is named in memory of Corporal James Hayward Arnal. It was named on November 4, 2010 by the Government of Manitoba.
James Hayward Arnal was born in April 1983 in Kelvington, Saskatchewan and grew up in Winnipeg. Giving up a promising career in the information technology sector, he enlisted in the Canadian Forces in April 2004. Already on his second tour in Afghanistan, Corporal Arnal was killed on July 18, 2008 when his patrol was hit by a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) while on a night-time foot patrol in Panjwaii District, southwest of Kandahar City. He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, stationed at Canadian Forces Base Shilo in Manitoba.
