Barry Helman Crescent is named in memory of Major William Barry Helman, CD.
William Barry Helman was born on 1 December 1929. After completing his schooling, he joined the military and served in the Korean War. Following the cessation of hostilities and his return to Canada, Major Helman continued his military career and deployed on UN peacekeeping missions to Cyprus and the Gaza Strip. Upon retirement, he continued to serve the military community as President of the Ottawa chapter of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP) and in this capacity, lead the drive to raise funds for the Perley-Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre. He was also active in the Korea Veterans Association of Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion. Major William Barry Helman passed away on 27 January 2013, in Ottawa.
