This memorial plaque is a tribute to Canada’s pivotal role in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP).

This plaque is one of 39 plaques unveiled in 2009 at Hylands Golf Club. The plaques commemorate former Ottawa-area military installations, a military patron saint, battle honours, ships, units, and squadrons.

Between April 1940 and 31 March 1945, over 100,000 staff manned the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). This huge air training scheme was established over some 360 schools and ancillary units on approximately 231 sites. President Franklin D. Roosevelt referred to Canada as the “aerodrome of democracy”.

Entre avril 1940 et 31 mai 1945, plus de 100,000 soldats ont été affectés au programme d’entraînement aérien du Commonwealth (BCATP). Ce plan d’entraînement aérien d’envergure était répandu dans plus de 360 écoles et unités auxiliaires sur environ 231 emplacements. Le Président Franklin D. Roosevelt parlait à l’époque du Canada comme étant « l’aérodrome de la démocratie ».
