In 1927, the Drayton Women’s Institute, led by then-president Isabel (Peggy) Henderson, took matters into their own hands to construct a soldiers' memorial for the Townships of Maryborough and Peel. Lieutenant Governor of Ontario W.D. Ross unveiled the cenotaph on July 27, 1927. It consists of a stone pillar topped with a ring of electric lights and a tablet listing the names of the fallen soldiers of the First World War. At the ceremony, 14 children placed baskets filled with poppies at the foot of the monument, one for each of the fourteen names engraved on the tablet. Three names were added in later years. After the Second World War, names of the fallen soldiers from that war were added.
