The statue, created by J.G. Tickell & Sons Bronze Founders in Toronto, was brought to St. Thomas in 1922 to remember those who had fought in the First World War. It was erected outside the old hospital on Pearl Street and later moved to the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital in the early 1980s, where it stood near the parking lot. It was moved to this site to complete the garden which officially opened on October 28, 2017.
