This memorial is dedicated to LAC Kenneth Gerald Spooner, GC on 15 September 2002 during the annual Battle of Britain Ceremony. The honour was bestowed to honour the courage and bravery LAC Spooner displayed 13 May 1943, when he sacrificed his life to save the lives of his comrades.

THE RCAF'S SECOND GEORGE CROSS WAS AWARDED
POSTHUMOUSLY TO LEADING AIRCRAFTSMAN SPOONER
IN MAY OF 1943. A STUDENT NAVIGATOR WITH NO
PILOT TRAINING, LAC SPOONER TOOK OVER THE
CONTROLS OF THE ANSON AIRCRAFT WHEN THE PILOT
SUDDENLY FAINTED.

HIS ACTION ENABLED THREE COMRADES TO BAIL
OUT. SOON AFTER. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED INTO
LAKE ERIE. THE AWARD OF THE GEORGE CROSS WAS
IN TRIBUTE TO HIS ACT OF SELF-SACRIFICE SO THAT
OTHERS MIGHT BE SAVED.
