This street is named in honour of Private Frederick Richard Langley (Army), a member of 1st Bn, Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, who died September 12, 1944 - burial - Calais Canadian War Cemetery (Leubringhen), Pas de Calais, France and Aircraftsman 1st Class Frederick Anthony Langley (RCAF), who died December 12, 1942. Researched by Nicole Patterson, Oshawa Public Libraries, 2008 (Aircraftsman 1st Class Frederick Anthony Langely) - Born in Oshawa to John Henry Langely and Ellen Florence Sargent, Langely attended Westmount Public School and had been employed by tinsmith, W.H. Bowden prior to enlisting with the RCAF on January 5., 1942. He died in the fire which blazed through the Knights of Columbus Hostel in St John's Newfoundland, killing at least 110 others. Little less than 2 months before, Langely had been greeted by his parents at the railway station in Oshawa on his return for the east coast after he had survived a torpedo attack on the ill-fated S.S. Caribou. Many Canadian servicemen lost their lives in that tragedy, but young Langely, after swimming for 20 minutes in the icy waters, and spending 5 hours in a life boat, was rescued by a Canadian minesweeper. He spent most several weeks leave in Oshawa after the sinking before returning to the east coast.
