Other

Erected as a lasting tribute to honour the memory of those from L’Orignal and Longueuil who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and Korean War. This memorial was erected by the Township of Longueuil and the Village of L’Orignal as a Centennial Project.

The cannon is a field gun (used for direct-fire artillery support fairly close to the front), with a 7.7 cm diameter barrel. The type is the FK 96 n.a. (neuer art, for "new model"), Germany's first quick firing cannon. The cannon ID is found on the back of the breech, just above the large circular hole for inserting the shell. It is written "Nr. 5255".

Gun 5255 was captured by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion on September 27, 1918, Near the Arras-Cambrai road, North of Bourlon Wood.

(Note: These two municipalities are now part of the amalgamated Township of Champlain.)

THE SEIGNEURY OF L’ORIGINAL
This area, the present township of Longueuil, was granted
in 1674 to François Prévost, Town Major of Quebec, and was
the first seigneury in what is now Ontario. Known originally
as the seigneury of "Pointe à L’Orignac," it was not developed
until the Hon. Joseph Le Moyne de Longueuil, seigneur since
1778, granted portions to settlers during 1784-90. Nathaniel
Hazard Treadwell purchased the seigneury in 1796, built
mills and roads and expanded settlements. A United States
citizen, Treadwell left Canada during the War of 1812 and
forfeited his lands, but later regained these and sold the
seigneury to his son Charles in 1824. By 1873 most of the
seigneurial lands had passed out of the family.
