This monument, a bronze statue sculpted by P. Hébert in 1919 and the plaque placed in 1927 by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, is dedicated to Madeleine de Verchères, a fourteen year old heroin who took command and defended the Fort de Verchères successfully during eight days against a war-party of Iroquois.

EN 1692, MADELEINE DE VERCHÈRES, ÂGÉE DE 14 ANS, SEULE AU FORT DE VERCHÈRES, AVEC SES DEUX JEUNES FRÈRES, UN VIEUX DOMESTIQUE ET DEUX SOLDATS, PREND LE COMMANDEMENT ET SE DÉFEND VICTORIEUSEMENT PENDANT HUIT JOURS CONTRE UNE TROUPE IROQUOISE.
IN 1692, MADELEINE DE VERCHÈRES THEN ONLY 14 YEARS OF AGE, ALONE IN FORT DE VERCHÈRES, WITH HER TWO YOUNG BROTHERS, AN OLD SERVANT AND TWO SOLDIERS, TOOK COMMAND AND DEFENDED THE FORT SUCCESSFULLY FOR EIGHT DAYS AGAINST A WAR-PARTY OF IROQUOIS.
