The War Relations Committee of the City Council, whose members included Dr. Hutchinson, George Wardrope, Arthur Evans and Chairman Tommy McCullogh, called upon Mrs. Dorothy Hughes, with the help of many others, to compile and organize the names and the well known calligrapher Mrs. Ava Evans to perform the calligraphy.
Starting in 1942-1943, names were collected at several sites such as Eaton's, the Post Office, and local pharmacies. This task fell to the many Ladies Auxiliaries that were active during the 40's. Some names may have been missed as it was up to relatives, friends and ex-service personnel to submit names for the list. The Book contains 2,709 names of which include: - 106 Killed in Action - 24 Prisoners of War - 20 Missing in Action - 16 Awards.
The book was bound in the early 1960's and placed on display in a marble and glass encasement at the Whalen building, now known as the Thunder Bay Hydro building, where it remained until July 4th 2003. It now resides at the Thunder Bay Armoury as a major attraction of the Thunder Bay Military Museum.
