Excerpts from the Bruce Mines Spectator, August 19, 1920 - Unveiling of Soldiers Monument at Rock Lake. Rock Lake has entered the list of the communities who commemorated the sacrifice of their fallen heroes by erecting a monument in their honour. A very interesting and impressive service took place at the unveiling Saturday afternoon last.
The monument is constructed of granite erected on a cement foundation. A slab upon which the names of the fallen are inscribed has been chiselled on one side of the monument and on top is the figure of an angel bending over looking at the names.
The service was in charge of Rev. W.J. Rickard, pastor of the Ophir field. Rev. J.O. Johnston, of Bruce Mines read a scripture lesson from Ephesians 6th Chapter which was followed by prayer led by Rev. P.B. de Lom Rector of St. George's Church. Deputy Minister Albert Grigg, having spent his early days in this section was chosen to speak a message of comfort to the parents of the Departed and in closing threw out the challenge to the returned men that in whatever spot they might be placed to live their lives, that they live it worthy of those who sleep in Flanders Field.
Wm. White Returned war veteran and a comrade of the honoured dead who had fought side by side with them in front line trenches and had seen many of them killed paid a glowing tribute to the courage, cheerfulness and spirit of mercy of these comrades and of the Canadian Soldier in general. He spoke with deep feeling of the manner in which they rendered first aid to their wounded comrades.
