Erected by the people of Spaniard’s Bay, Tilton and Bishops Cove in grateful remembrance of those who laid down their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Following the First World War and up until 1952, the grave marker of Private John C. Chipman was used as a War Memorial in Spaniard’s Bay. Chipman was killed in action while serving with the American Forces in the First World War. His body was then returned to Newfoundland for burial. Each July 1st and November 11th, Veteran’s of Spaniard’s Bay, Tilton and Bishops Cove paraded to the cemetery on Mall Tree Hill, where War Memorial Services took place. During the spring of 1950, what is now Branch Number 9 of The Royal Canadian Legion, decided to establish a program to erect a War Memorial in Spaniard’s Bay. In May 1951, the decision was made to erect the monument at Mint Cove Beach. The unveiling took place on November 11th, 1952. In 1987 renovations to the memorial site took place and on October 3rd, 1987 a re-dedication of the memorial and the official opening of the town’s Veteran’s Memorial Park occurred. The Towns of Spaniard’s Bay, Tilton and Bishops Cove donated flagpoles. The park grounds is decorated with a World War 1 Lewis Gun donated by Comrade Graham Bursey of Bay Roberts and an anchor, donated by, Mr. Tom Porter of Port de Grave.
