This memorial is dedicated to the First and Second World Wars' deceased comrades. The original Thessalon Cenotaph was erected in 1925 and dedicated in 1926. In 1988, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 182 canvassed Veterans and the Town of Thessalon to build a new cenotaph. They received overwhelming support to go ahead. In January 1989, a questionnaire was published in the Sentinel to solicit public opinion. A public vote was held in February 1989 for the complete restoration.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 182 membership approved the cenotaph design in May 1989. A tender of $33,000 from De Fazio Memorials Ltd. of Sault Ste. Marie in September 1989 was approved. A rededication ceremony was held August 25, 1990.
