Peel's Dixie Road was commemorated as Veterans Memorial Roadway with the first sign unveiled in May of 2016.  Local Legion members helped choose the road for commemoration and provided input on the signage. The idea was suggested about two years previous by then mayor Marolyn Morrison. Morrison has two sons in the military and both did tours in Afghanistan.

Over 50 kilometres of roadway is commemorated, from the foot of Lake Ontario to Peel's Highway 9 border. Dixie runs from Lake Ontario and ends at Olde Base line, but the designation extends north to Highway 9. The road names have not changed. In Caledon, where Dixie Road ends, the commemoration and signage continues along Caledon's Horseshoe Hill Road.
